New Delhi:

A meeting of the Parliamentary Board, the highest policy-making body of the BJP, was held at the party headquarters here on Tuesday to brainstorm on the name of the BJP-led NDA alliance candidate in the presidential election.

After the meeting, JP Nadda announced that former Jharkhand governor Draupadi Murmu would be the NDA's presidential candidate.

Nadda told that in the meeting of the Parliamentary Board, about 20 names were discussed and the tribal women leader Murmu was stamped.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and other members of the Parliamentary Board are present in the meeting.

Earlier, on reaching the BJP headquarters, Nadda welcomed Prime Minister Modi.

Former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha has been fielded as a joint candidate by the opposition parties for the presidential election. The term of the current President Ram Nath Kovind is ending on July 24.

After the announcement of Sinha's name as the opposition candidate, voting for the next President's election is now being held on July 18.

The process of filling nomination papers for the Presidential election is underway.

June 29 is the last date for filing nominations.

Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh along with Nadda met Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu this morning ahead of the crucial BJP Parliamentary Board meeting.

After this there are speculations that the ruling NDA can make him a candidate in the presidential election, but it did not happen.

Naidu reached Hyderabad on Monday on a three-day visit from Delhi.

He participated in a program organized by the Ministry of Tourism in Secunderabad on Tuesday morning on the occasion of International Yoga Day and also practiced yoga.

He then cut short his travel and returned to Delhi on Tuesday.

It is worth noting that the BJP-led NDA is in a strong position on the basis of numbers in the presidential election and if it gets the support of parties like BJD or the ruling YSR Congress in Andhra Pradesh, then its victory will be certain.
