World Refugee Day is an international day designated by the United Nations to honor refugees across the globe.

It is celebrated every year on June 20 and celebrates the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their country to escape conflict or persecution.

More than two decades ago, over 1 million Kosovo Albanians were forced to flee their homes due to the horrific war and crimes committed by Serbia.

They mainly went to Albania and Northern Macedonia, but also to other countries.

This day, this year, is marked by the minds of Ukrainians who are forced to leave the country after unprovoked Russian aggression.

UNHCR says refugees should be treated with dignity and seeking security is a human right.

Wherever they come from, people forced to flee should be welcomed.

Refugees come from all over the world.

To escape danger, they can take a plane, a boat or travel on foot.

What remains universal is the right to seek security.

Whenever people are forced to flee, they have a right to be protected.

Whatever the threat - war, violence, persecution - they all deserve protection.

"Everyone has the right to be safe," the UNHCR said in a statement.

In May 2022, the world reached a poignant milestone: the number of people forcibly displaced globally exceeded 100 million, or more than 1 percent of the world's population and equals the 14th most populous country in plans, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
