According to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Vladimir Putin fears the pervasive "spark" of democracy that is spreading in Russia.
Scholz said Putin is trying to divide Europe and turn it into a world dominated by several different spheres of influence.
The German Chancellor made this comment in an interview for the newspaper Muenchner Mercury, an interview which was posted on the government website on Monday, Telegrafi reports.
Asked if Putin would accept Ukraine's rapprochement with the European Union, he said: "The Russian president must accept that there is a community in his 'neighborhood' that has a democracy based on the rule of law, and that this community is growing. more".
"He is clearly afraid of the spreading spark of democracy in his country," Scholz said.
