An Iranian fighter jet crashed near the city of Isfahan in the central part of the country after an engine failure, but the two pilots survived, the AP reported, citing information from Iranian media.

The pilots were taken to a local hospital, the official Iranian news agency IRNA reported.

She added that the crash was caused by a technical malfunction in the engine of the F-14 Tomket fighter.

A video released by the agency shows thick smoke rising over the wreckage of a plane in a desert area.

The Iranian Air Force owns various types of aircraft purchased before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, and F-14 Tomket fighters are made in the United States.

Iran also owns Russian-made MiG and Su aircraft.

Western sanctions, which have been going on for decades, have made it difficult to provide spare parts and maintain aging aircraft.
