At least nine people were killed and 40 were injured when a bus carrying people on a religious trip overturned in southern Mexico, the Associated Press reported.

The Civil Protection Service of the southern state of Chiapas announced that the accident happened on Friday before dawn in the town of Tila.

Passengers attending an event on the occasion of the Catholic holiday of Corpus Christi (Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ) were traveling back to their homes in Tabasco when the bus overturned.

The causes of the crash are still unclear.
