A wildfire broke out last night in a wooded area southwest of Berlin.

It is assumed that there are unexploded ordnance from the Second World War, and this makes it difficult to extinguish, DPA reported.

The forest fire in the area of the town of Troienbritzen in Brandenburg is burning on an area of about 60 hectares and forms a huge pillar of smoke in the air, which can be seen for miles, said Raimund Engel, a spokesman for the fire service.

About 380 firefighters, police, servicemen and civil defense officials have been working to fight the blaze, a spokesman for the district authorities said.

This massive deployment of manpower to put out the blaze raises concerns as the fire spreads to an area where authorities suspect there are unexploded ordnance from World War II, Engel said, adding that there have already been explosions.

The fire broke out against a sharp rise in temperatures in many parts of Germany, which dried up the soil.

The situation is further complicated by the constantly changing direction of the wind.

Efforts to extinguish the fire are expected to continue today.
