Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said today that the Turkish national airline will be renamed "Turkiye Hava Yollari" instead of the current "Turkish airlines", the Associated Press reported.

The change of the name of the national air carrier is related to the decision to change the international name of the country.

In late May, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that Turkey was formally asking the United Nations and other international organizations to change the spelling of Turkey's name.

A few days later, UN spokesman Stefan Dujarric announced that the UN would now use "Turkiye" instead of "Turkey" after "changing Turkey's name" at Ankara's request.

Ankara subsequently made such a request to the EU and NATO.

The term "Turkiye" "represents and expresses the culture, civilization and values of the Turkish people in the best possible way," Erdogan's decree to change the name said.

The Anatolian State Agency points out that the innovation was adopted as part of steps taken by Ankara to increase the country's international prestige.

"Turkey" no longer exists.

It is already a Turkie, Erdogan said today at the launch ceremony of a new communications satellite.

"Turkiye hava yollar" will be written on our planes instead of "Turkish Airlines", the president added.
