Both Severodonetsk and the Azot plant have become key points in the conflict, with hundreds of Ukrainian civilians and soldiers seeking refuge there from artillery shelling by Russian forces trying to take the city, local officials said.

All bridges over the Seversky Donets River connecting Severodonetsk with Ukrainian-controlled territory have been destroyed, Reuters reported.
