Imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been transferred from the prison unit to an unknown location, his ally Leonid Volkov said.

"We do not know where Alexei is now and in which prison unit he was sent," Volkov wrote in the Telegram.

Alexei Navalny was arrested in January 2021 when he returned from treatment in Germany after being previously poisoned with a nerve agent, for which he blamed Moscow.

Authorities said he violated the three-year suspended sentence for six months abroad,

Navalny was arrested on his return to Moscow in January 2021 after spending several months recovering from a nerve agent poisoning he blames on the Kremlin.

Moscow has always denied the allegations.

In March, Navalny was given an additional nine years in prison for fraud and contempt of court - charges she says are politically motivated.

His Anti-Corruption Foundation (BFK) has been condemned by law as an "extremist" organization.
