German justice today ordered the placement in a psychiatric institution of the 29-year-old driver, who crashed his car into a group of pedestrians in Berlin yesterday, killing a woman and according to the latest data 32 people, AFP reported.

"Many elements suggest paranoid schizophrenia" in this German of Armenian descent, prosecutorial spokesman Sebastian Buchner told the media, ruling out any terrorist motives for the crime.

"There are indications that the suspect suffers from a mental illness, which was the basis of his act yesterday.

A search turned up drugs, "the spokesman said, ruling out a version of a motor vehicle accident.
