West Bengal-Mamata Banerjee assures nurse to apply for government job, artificial hand

Kolkata:

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday assured a government job and a prosthetic hand to the nurse whose hand was allegedly amputated by her husband.

Banerjee also assured Renu Khatoon, a nurse from Chinaspur in Ketugram, that the state government would bear all the expenses for the treatment of her severed right hand.

Banerjee said she has directed Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi to find out why Khatoon had to spend Rs 57,000 despite having a Swasthya Saathi card.

The smart card, launched by Banerjee, provides cashless treatment facilities up to Rs 5 lakh per family per year in hospitals.

"We are doing three jobs for Renu Khatoon (nurse).

Since she was 22nd on the panel in the Nursing exam and is no longer her right hand, we will offer her a job which she can do while sitting.

"We will also help him by providing prosthetic hands," he said.

In addition, the state will bear all the expenses incurred on his treatment.

He had to pay Rs 57,000 despite having a Swasthya Saathi card from the government and this is not acceptable.

I have asked the Chief Secretary to find out the reason for this.

In a shocking incident, 23-year-old Renu Khatoon's husband, her two friends and her in-laws on Sunday visited her in-laws' house in East Bardhaman district to indirectly stop her from working as a nurse in a government hospital. He allegedly assaulted her and cut off her right hand.

The police have started investigation based on the complaint of the nurse's father Azizul Haque.

Police have arrested Renu's father-in-law and husband.
