A passenger train derailed in eastern Iran, killing at least 10 people and injuring 50 others, some in critical condition, local authorities said.

Iranian state television reported on Wednesday that the death toll could rise, although initial details about the crash involving a train of about 350 passengers still remain unclear.

Four of the seven train carriages derailed near the city of Tabas, which is located about 550 kilometers southeast of the Iranian capital Tehran, according to the released report, Telegrafi reports.

Rescue crews rushed to the scene by helicopter and ambulance, in a remote area where radio communication is poor.

Some officials said at least 16 of the injured suffered serious injuries, and some were taken to area hospitals.
