India may soon allow commercial companies to export 1.2 million tonnes of wheat, government sources in Delhi said today, quoted by BTA.

Indian ports are full of grain containers after authorities unexpectedly banned grain exports on May 14th.

The Government of India has announced that it will allow traders who have the relevant letters of credit to export wheat to countries that insist on grain supplies to meet the urgent food needs of their populations.

Since the ban was imposed, Delhi authorities have allowed 469,202 tonnes of wheat to be exported, but 1.7 million tonnes are still stranded in ports.

This raises concerns that the quality of wheat may be reduced due to torrential rains during the monsoon period in India.
