New Delhi:

The Union Environment Ministry on Wednesday rejected the Environment Performance Index- 2022, in which India has been placed at the bottom of the list of 180 countries.

The index, recently published by the Yale Environmental Law and Policy Center and the International Center for Earth Science Information Network, Columbia University, used 40 performance indicators across 11 categories to assess countries in terms of climate change performance, environmental health and the importance of ecology. .

In a statement, the ministry said, "The recently released Environmental Performance Index (EPI) 2022 is based on unfounded assumptions on several indicators.

Some of the indicators used to measure performance are based on assumptions and unscientific methods.

The EPI provides a data-based summary of the state of sustainability around the world.

The EPI scores 180 countries based on climate change performance, environmental health and ecosystem status using 40 performance indicators across 11 categories.

The report said, "India (18.9), Myanmar (19.4), Vietnam (20.1), Bangladesh (23.1) and Pakistan (24.6) have got the lowest marks.
