The chairman of the Democratic Party (PD), Sali Berisha, has called the Socialist Party's proposal for the presidential candidate an unconstitutional act and a dangerous precedent for the country and democracy.

Berisha through a status on the social network Facebook wrote that the proposal of the Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Army for the post of President of the Republic is a flagrant violation of the Constitution of the country with serious consequences for the present and future of the country.

According to him, active-duty servicemen can not be elected or appointed to other state positions, nor can they participate in political parties or activities.

"An unconstitutional act and a very dangerous precedent for the country and democracy.

Dear friends, the proposal of the Chief of General Staff of the Albanian Army for the post of President of the Republic is a flagrant violation of the Constitution of the country with very serious consequences for the present and the future of the country.

The Constitution of Albania in Article 167 stipulates:

"Active servicemen can not be elected or appointed to other state positions, nor can they participate in parties or political activities.

"Members of the Armed Forces or persons performing alternative service, enjoy all constitutional rights and freedoms unless the law provides otherwise," Berisha wrote, among other things.
