Officials from Sweden and Finland are expected to arrive in Turkey on Wednesday to discuss Ankara's opposition to their application for NATO membership.

This was announced by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, who told reporters that the delegation would meet with Presidential Spokesman Ibrahim Kalin and Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Sedat Onal.

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto also confirmed the meeting.

This month, Finland and Sweden formally submitted their applications to join NATO at a "historic moment" fueled by security concerns amid Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Their applications are now being considered by 30 members of the military alliance.

However, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has indicated that Turkey could use its status as a member of the military alliance to veto any bid for membership by the two countries.

Earlier in the day, the leader of a Turkish nationalist party allied with President Erdogan said that Turkey should consider leaving NATO if "circumstances become unresolved" and that Turkey was forced to approve the membership of Sweden and Finland.
