Sweden and Finland, which applied for NATO membership last week, will attend the alliance's summit in Madrid in late May.

This was stated today by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez at the forum in Davos, BTA reported, quoting AFP.

The two Scandinavian countries will be, of course, at the summit on June 28th and 30th, Sanchez said when asked by Economic Forum President Bjorge Brende.

"The situation, the current context and the political will of the allies is to work with these two countries," the socialist said.

Stoltenberg: A way can be found for Sweden and Finland to join NATO

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Finland and Sweden submitted their candidacies to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on 18 May.

However, Turkey has sparked a crisis in the alliance by opposing the two countries' membership, for which there is strong support among other member states.

The Finnish Foreign Minister said in Davos today that the two Scandinavian countries would send delegations to Ankara tomorrow, hoping to persuade Turkey not to stop accepting them.
