A magnitude 5.8 earthquake was recorded today in northeastern Japan, but there is no danger of a tsunami, the country's meteorological service said, quoted by TASS.

The quake was off the coast of Fukushima prefecture.

The epicenter was reported at a depth of nearly 30 km below the ocean floor.

So far there is no information about casualties and damage, as well as consequences for the safety of the damaged Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant.

The quake was felt by residents of a number of northern and northeastern prefectures in Japan.
