Big relief to Mehul Choksi

New Delhi:

Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi has got a big relief in Dominica.

Officials in Dominica said, "The ongoing proceedings against Choksi for the 'illegal entry' have now been closed. Choksi has been made an accused by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate in the Rs 13,500-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. Choksi went missing from Antigua on 23 May, which was later mysteriously revealed in Dominica.

Choksi again went back to Antigua in July last year after being granted bail on medical grounds by the Dominica High Court.

Choksi had fought his case against a claim of 'illegal entry', alleging that he was abducted from Antigua's Jolly Harbor on May 23 by Antigua and Indian-looking policemen and carried by a boat. Dominica was brought.

The CBI recently registered a fresh case against the fugitive diamond trader and his company Gitanjali Gems for allegedly cheating the Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI).

Choksi and his nephew, Nirav Modi are accused of embezzling a total of Rs 13,500 crore using LoUs and FLCs by bribing officials at the Brady House branch in Mumbai.

Choksi had already taken citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 using the Citizenship by Investment Program before fleeing India in the first week of January 2018.
