Australian Labor Party leader Anthony Albanese will become Australia's next prime minister after defeating Conservative incumbent Scot Morrison.

He is confident he will form a minority government, although the counting of votes in the parliamentary elections is continuing,

cnn reports.

The parties need a 76-seat majority to form a majority government.

Labor currently secures 72 seats, according to the Australian Election Commission.

Albanese, meanwhile, served as a minister in the previous Labor government under Prime Ministers Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard, before taking over as Labor leader following the party's latest defeat in the 2019 elections.

Instead of a political contest, this election focused on the character of the leaders - Morrison has also faced accusations of dishonesty from French President Emmanuel Macron.

Meanwhile, Albanese got the nickname of the construction site because the main word was "construction" - "If I am elected Prime Minister, I will build things in this country", he had promised during the election campaign.

The 59-year-old will become the first prime minister of the country that has no Anglo-Celtic origin, ie his father is from Italy.

As one of Australia's longest-serving politicians, he says it is time for parliament to reflect on "modern Australia".

He has earned a reputation as an advocate for the free healthcare system for Australians, an advocate for the LGBT community and as an avid rugby fan.
