Today the European Commission adopted a decision to close the criminal procedure for non-fulfillment of Bulgaria's obligations under the Floods Directive, the press center of the Ministry of Environment and Water announced.

The procedure was launched on October 30, 2020 due to the fact that the country did not meet the deadline for reviewing and updating the preliminary flood risk assessments, which had to be done by December 22, 2018. The deadline for the revised preliminary flood risk assessments were to be submitted to the Commission by 22 March 2019.

On September 23, 2021, Bulgaria received a reasoned opinion on the violation due to the continuing non-fulfillment of these obligations.

As a result of the actions taken, our commitments were fulfilled and this was reported to the EC at the end of 2021.

In practice, with its decision today, the Commission gives its assessment that Bulgaria has fulfilled its obligations and has eliminated the violation of EU law.
