The US authorities are confident that a consensus will be reached on the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO, but did not specify what they intend to do to remove Turkey's objections.

This was stated today by White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre at a press briefing, world agencies reported, quoted by BTA.

We are confident that a consensus will be reached on the accession procedure, she said in response to a question about how Washington could try to influence Ankara's position, which has said it opposes the two countries' accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.

Jean-Pierre reminded that US Secretary of State Anthony Blinkon had expressed confidence that a consensus would be reached on Turkey's position.

As we know, there is considerable support for the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO.

But I cannot speak on behalf of the Turkish authorities about what they want or strive for.

However, we are confident that a compromise will be reached, she added.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last night that Turkey would not back down on the issue of Sweden's and Finland's accession to NATO after the two countries formalized their alliances.

Erdogan said delegations from Sweden and Finland should not bother to come to Ankara to persuade Turkey to approve their NATO membership.

The president reiterated that Sweden and Finland were sheltering people he said were linked to groups identified as terrorist.
