Varanasi / New Delhi:

The Supreme Court will hold an important hearing today on the petition of the Gyanvapi Masjid management against the survey of the Gyanvapi-Shringar Gauri complex in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud will hear the matter.

In its petition, the Masjid Committee has termed the order of the local court to conduct a survey in the mosque as a violation of the Places of Worship Act and challenged it.

The petition has sought a stay on the survey.

On the other hand, hearing is to be held in Varanasi court today, in which the survey report has to be submitted to the court commissioner.

Important information related to the case:

  • In the survey conducted on the third and last day at Gyanvapi Masjid on Monday, it has been claimed by the Hindu side that Shivling has been found from the well inside the mosque premises.

On this, the lower court has directed the district administration to seal the place where 'Shivling' has been claimed to be found.

  • The commissioner's report will be heard in Varanasi court on Tuesday itself.

So there will be hearing on May 20 in Allahabad High Court on 6 petitions given on the same matter.

According to the Supreme Court's business list on Tuesday, a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and PS Narasimha will hear the plea of Anjuman Intejamiya Masjid, the committee to manage the affairs of Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi.

  • In a written order passed by a bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana on Friday, it was ordered to list the petition before a bench headed by Justice Chandrachud.

However, last Friday, the bench refused to pass any interim order of status quo against the ongoing survey of the religious complex on a plea by the Muslim side.
