Sweden has announced that it wants to become a member of NATO.

The Nordic country will follow in the footsteps of Finland, which has officially confirmed that it has applied for membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, especially now that Russia has invaded Ukraine.

Magdalena Andersson, Prime Minister of Sweden, said that with this move begins a new "era" for this Scandinavian country, Telegrafi reports.

"The government has decided to inform NATO of Sweden's desire to become a member of the Alliance," she told a news conference.

"We are leaving an era to enter a new one", said among other things the Swedish leader.

Its neighbor, Finland, did the same, confirming that it was applying for NATO membership.

Last week, the Finnish president and prime minister announced that their country would join NATO without any "delay".
