Serbia has so far suffered the least from the effects of the big wave of refugees from Ukraine, the Belgrade-based Politika newspaper reported, adding that 7,000 Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Serbia since the start of Russia's military operation in Ukraine.

According to police, about 2,000 refugees from Ukraine have been housed in private accommodation, and about 70 have taken refuge in an emergency reception center for migrants in Vranje.

The newspaper notes that in the past two and a half months, 7,000 Ukrainians have registered to reside in Serbia, but many have continued their refugee odyssey to other destinations in Western Europe.

Many refugees from Ukraine have stayed with relatives or friends.
