Hundreds demonstrated today in Sokoto, northwestern Nigeria, in protest of the arrest of two students following the murder of a Christian student accused of sacrilege, locals said.

Dozens of students at Shehu Shagari School stoned Deborah Samuel to death on Thursday, then burned her body after reading her comment on social media, which was considered an insult to the Prophet Muhammad.

Police say they have arrested two men and are looking for other suspects in the murder, videotaped, circulating on social media.

Young Muslims reacted today by taking to the streets of Sokoto, demanding the release of the suspects.

Some protesters marched on the palace of Mohammed Saad Abubakar, Sultan of Sokoto and a top Islamic authority in Nigeria, who condemned the killing and demanded that the perpetrators be tried.

The mob wanted police to stop harassing those identified as participants in the killing, Ibrahim Arkila, a local resident, told AFP.

Security forces guarding the palace demanded that the protesters disperse, but they became uncontrollable, said Bube Ando, ​​who lives nearby.
