Ukraine's chief prosecutor, Irina Venediktov, said the prosecutor's office had charged a captured Russian soldier with war crimes for the first time since the conflict began, the Associated Press and BTA reported.

21-year-old Sergeant Vadin Shishimarin is accused of killing an unarmed 62-year-old civilian who was shot while riding a bicycle.

The murder took place in the village of Chupahivka, four days after the start of hostilities.

Shishimarin, who was part of a tank battalion, could face up to 15 years in prison.

The chief prosecutor did not specify when the trial will begin.
