By its decision, the Latvian Seimas repealed this item.

The decision was made in two readings.

Thus, the Seimas removed the legal obstacles to the demolition of the memorial complex to the soldiers of the Soviet Army and the Liberators of Riga, which is located in Victory Park in the center of the Latvian capital.

This complex has been debated for many years.

"Russia is purposefully strengthening the current association of the Russian Federation with the Soviet Union - both in the rhetoric of officials and in the information space full of attempts to justify the actions of the Russian army in Ukraine to eradicate fascism and genocide," said Chairman of the Sejm Foreign Affairs Committee Richard Coles.

He was one of the initiators of the vote.

Every year on May 9, tens of thousands of people, mostly Russian-speaking and holders of Russian passports, gathered in Victory Park.

The Russian embassy in Latvia took an active part in the actions, as a rule, a concert of Russian stars took place.

At the same time, in Latvia, the holiday of May 9 has always been ambiguous.

For the Latvian-speaking and pro-European part of the population, the complex and the holiday itself are a symbol of the occupation that began after the Baltic states came under Soviet control.
