German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has backed Finland's membership in NATO.

APA reports quoting CNN that Scholz shared on his Twitter account that Berlin fully supports Finland's membership in the alliance.

"I welcome Finland's decision to join NATO immediately," Scholz said on Twitter.

The Chancellor said that during a telephone conversation with Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, he assured him of the full support of the German government to Finland.

Finnish President Sauli Niinisto said on Twitter that he was grateful to Germany for its support.

He added that during the talks the sides discussed the need to achieve peace in Ukraine.
