Ukraine has announced it will bring to justice the first Russian soldier after allegedly killing a 62-year-old man in Ukraine's Sumy region.

The Prosecutor General's Office said it had filed an indictment against Vadim Shishimari, commander of the 32010 military unit of the 4th Kantemirov Tank Division of the Moscow region.

The investigation alleges that the 21-year-old Russian killed a 62-year-old unarmed resident who was riding a bicycle along the road in the village of Chupakhivka in the Sumy region on 28 February.

According to the statement, Russian forces entered the village in a stolen vehicle with perforated wheels.

Along the way, they saw a man returning home and talking on the phone, according to the statement.

One of the Russians ordered a sergeant to kill the civilian so as not to report to the Ukrainian army.

Shishimarin fired several shots from the open window of a car and hit the elderly man in the head.

"Shishimarin is currently in custody.

Prosecutors and investigators of the SBU have gathered sufficient evidence for his involvement in violation of the laws and customs of war, combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

"He faces 10 and 15 years in prison or life imprisonment," said Ukraine's Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova.
