Shashi Tharoor furious at Vivek Agnihotri and Anupam Kher for dragging Sunanda Pushkar's name

New Delhi :

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday came under attack from filmmaker and actor Anupam Kher for his reference to the film 'The Kashmir Files' being banned in Singapore.

Kher and Agnihotri hit out at Tharoor, citing that his late wife Sunanda Pushkar was a Kashmiri Pandit.

To this, Tharoor said that dragging his late wife into the matter was unwanted and condemnable.

The Lok Sabha member had shared a news story on Twitter which mentioned that 'The Kashmir Files' has been banned in Singapore.

To this the film's director Vivek Agnihotri said that Singapore is the world's most regressive censor.

"Even a romantic film like 'The Leela Hotel Files' will be banned in Singapore.

Please stop making fun of Kashmiri Hindu genocide."

Attacking Tharoor, Agnihotri referred to a hotel in Delhi in which Tharoor's wife Sunanda was found dead in January 2014 in a room.

Agnihotri said Tharoor should apologize to the soul of his late wife.

Hitting out at Tharoor, Anupam Kher said, "Your brutality towards the Kashmir Hindu genocide is very sad.

At least you should show sensitivity towards Kashmiri Pandits for Sunanda's sake.

One should not feel a winner when the film is banned.

Later, in a statement, Tharoor, without naming Kher and Agnihotri, said that he had only tweeted factual news and had not commented on 'The Kashmir Files'.

"At no time have I made fun of or insulted the suffering of Kashmiri Pandits.

I understand their suffering very well and have been drawing people's attention towards it over the years.

The Congress leader said, "Dragging my late wife Sunanda in this matter is unwanted and condemnable.

No one is more aware of her (Sunanda) thoughts than me.

I accompanied him to the destroyed house of his ancestors in Sopore.

There I spoke to his neighbors and friends, who were both Hindus and Muslims.

My wife believed in reconciliation, not hatred.
