Aleh Hruzdzilovich

has been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison since December 23.

At the end of March he was transferred from the Minsk pre-trial detention center on Valadarski Street to Mahilou prison № 4.

On May 10, a judge of the Minsk City Court ruled to uphold his sentence.

Aleh's wife Mariana Hruzdzilovich told Svaboda about it.

Aleh himself was not brought to the Minsk City Court to consider his cassation appeal.

Persecution of Aleh Hruzdzilovich

On July 16, 2021, security officers came to the Minsk office of Radio Svaboda, snatched video surveillance cameras on the floor and broke down three doors in the office.

The equipment was confiscated.

Aleh Hruzdzilovich, who was deprived of accreditation by the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, was also searched.

He was detained and sentenced to 10 days in jail.

No charges were filed then.

Aleh Hruzdzilovich was detained again on December 23 and his measure of restraint was changed, he was transferred to the pre-trial detention center No. 1 in Minsk on Valadarski Street.

Gruzdzilovich's first interrogation took place on December 28.

Investigators charged him under Article 342 of the Criminal Code - organizing and preparing actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them.

The case was instituted for coverage by Aleh Hruzdzilovich of one of the protest marches in 2020, when he was deprived of the accreditation of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry and worked as a freelance correspondent of "Narodnaya Volya", he had an editorial task.

In 2020, Aleh Hruzdzilovich served 15 days of administrative arrest for allegedly participating in one of the marches in which he worked as a journalist.

On March 3, political prisoner Aleh Hruzdzilovich was sentenced to 1.5 years in prison.

He was accused of three episodes of involvement in alleged riots during protests against the rigged 2020 elections and violence.

He was also sued for 56,000 rubles.

Oleg Gruzdzilovich was born in 1958 in Maladzyechna, studied in Brest, graduated from the Belarusian State University, lives in Minsk.



In journalism since 1980.

In 1988, working as the executive secretary of the newspaper Znamya Yunosti, he initiated a meeting of the editorial board, which decided not to comply with the order of the Central Committee of the Communist Party to reprint from the Russian press anti-perestroika article "I can not yield to principles."



He resigned from the state-run Narodnaya Gazeta in 1995 after his report on the beating of BPF opposition deputies protesting against a referendum on language and state symbols was filmed.



Radio Svaboda is responsible for covering the issue of political prisoners, missing opposition figures.

He reported on lawsuits against protesters, politicians, well-known businessmen, officials and others.



He was repeatedly detained by special services and police while performing journalistic duties.
