"Every effort must be made to avoid escalating and expanding the conflict in Ukraine, which could lead to an uncontrollable situation," Xi said in a video interview.

The Chinese president stressed the need to restore peace in Ukraine by supporting the Russian-Ukrainian talks, TASS reported, citing Zhenmin Zhibao.

"China has always supported peace. Each of the stakeholders must support the restoration of peace by promoting negotiations between Russia and Ukraine," the Chinese leader said.

He has invited Germany to take part in the Global Security Initiative, presented by him last month, which upholds the principle of "indivisible security", a concept cited by Russia to justify its attack on Ukraine.
