Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has arrived in Saudi Arabia.

This is his first visit there since the gruesome assassination in Saudi Arabia of Saudi journalist Jamal Hashoghi in 2018 - a case that has cooled relations between the two regional rivals, according to AFP.

Why did Turkey refuse to prosecute the suspects in the assassination of Jamal Hashoghi?

Erdogan's plane landed in Jeddah.

He will have a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman.

The visit comes at a time when Turkey is experiencing a severe economic crisis - the Turkish lira depreciated by 44 percent against the dollar last year, and inflation is 61.1 percent on an annual basis as of March.

This situation has forced Erdogan to soften relations with former rivals, such as Egypt and Israel, and especially with the rich Gulf monarchies, including Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Erdogan will not make any statements to the press during his visit to Saudi Arabia.

He will also have a meeting with King Salman, which will be attended by Mohammed Bin Salman.
