National Conference leader Omar Abdullah.

Srinagar:

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah said on Wednesday that at present India is not the country in which Jammu and Kashmir was merged.

He also said that if people had known that the religious rights of Muslims would "not be protected" in this country, the decision would have been "something else".

Speaking to the media in Srinagar, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir said, 'When we decided to join India, we joined a country where every religion will be treated equally.

We were not told that one religion would be preferred and the other would be suppressed.

He said, "Had we known, then perhaps our decision would have been different. We had taken a conscious decision because we were told that every religion would get equal rights."

The National Conference leader also talked about the ongoing controversy over loudspeakers during prayers, hijab in class and halal meat in mosques in states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.

He said that Muslims are being suppressed for their religious beliefs and their way of life.

Abdullah questioned, 'Why should we not use loudspeakers in mosques?

If other religious places have the right to use it, then why not the mosques?'

In the past few weeks, there have been clashes during Ram Navami processions in states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat.

Violence erupted when processions accompanied by loud music passed through Muslim-dominated areas and were allegedly pelted with stones.

In Karnataka, amid protests by students against a ban on wearing hijabs in class, another controversy erupted when right-wing Hindu groups objected to the sale of halal meat.

Abdullah said, 'You will tell us not to sell halal meat.

Why?

Our religion tells us to eat Halal meat.

why are you stopping it?

We are not forcing you to eat Halal.

Has any Muslim forced you to eat Halal?

You eat the food you want.

We do the same.

The former chief minister said that Muslims never objected to loudspeakers in temples or other religious places.

At the same time, he said, 'We never told you that there should not be a mike in the temples.

You should not use mike in temples and gurudwaras.

But you only get mad at our mics.

You are scared of our religion.

You don't like the way we dress.

We do not like to pray.

You don't have a problem with anyone else.
