Aung Soon Suu Kyi sentenced to 5 years

New Delhi:

A Myanmar court on Wednesday found ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi guilty of corruption.

Sources said the pro-democracy leader was sentenced to five years in jail after being found guilty in the corruption case.

Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi was convicted of accepting a bribe of $600,000 in cash and gold.

Authorities in military-ruled Myanmar on Friday also filed fresh corruption charges against ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi in a helicopter purchase case.

Kyodo News, citing the source, reported that if convicted on all charges, it could result in more than 100 years in prison.

On Friday, the chairman of the elected government, Win Myint Aung Soon Suu Kyi, was charged with corruption in connection with the helicopter case, Kyodo New reported.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since a coup on February 1, when Myanmar's military declared a year-long state of emergency, ousting the government led by Senior General Ming Aung Huling.

During this, Myanmar also had to deal with many violent incidents.
