A strong earthquake in Bosnia and Herzegovina has claimed the lives of one person.

Several people were injured.

There is also material damage, world agencies reported, citing local media, quoted by BTA.

A 28-year-old woman was seriously injured in Stolac when a rock fell on her house as a result of the quake.

She died at a hospital in Mostar.

Among the injured were members of the victim's family.

Walls have collapsed in Stolac, Lubin and Mostar.

There are also cracks in some buildings.

The magnitude 5.7 earthquake was at a depth of 5 kilometers.

The epicenter was 14km northeast of the 4,000-strong town of Lubine and 42km southeast of Mostar, home to about 104,000 people. 

The quake lasted about 20 seconds and was felt in Belgrade, Zagreb and Skopje, about 400km from the epicenter.

Powerful earthquake in Nicaragua

The previous major earthquake in the Balkans was on December 29th, 2020, in Petrinja near Zagreb, killing seven people and destroying hundreds of buildings.

In March 2020, Zagreb was shaken by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake that caused severe damage.

In November 2019, more than 50 people died in a magnitude 6.4 earthquake in Albania, leaving thousands homeless at the time.
