A merchant ship leaving Egypt for Malta, carrying 750 tonnes of diesel fuel, sank today in the Gulf of Gabes, off the southeastern coast of Tunisia, a local court spokesman told AFP.

"The ship sank in Tunisian territorial waters this morning. There is currently no fuel leak," said spokesman Mohamed Karai, adding that a disaster prevention commission would meet to decide what action to take.
