Atanas Pekanov is an economist at the Austrian Institute for Economic Research (WIFO) in Vienna.

He added that in his opinion the BNB should become more proactive in its communication with citizens and businesses, following the example of the European Central Bank, and not be so "closed and conservative".

Pekanov explained that the BNB has a leading role in protecting the citizens when the time comes to reformat the currency from lev to euro, when we enter the Eurozone.

Many Bulgarians are not convinced that the positives will outweigh the negatives when we adopt the euro.

That is why we need to explain what the risks will be and make sure that these risks do not materialize, Pekanov commented.

Why is the BNB Governor so important?

Asked whether there is a danger of rising commodity prices in our country when we adopt the euro, Pekanov explained that in order to prevent such a phenomenon, best practices and mechanisms from other countries should be applied, emphasizing the need for "very serious monitoring. ".

On the topic of the battery plant worth BGN 1.5 billion, included in the Recovery and Sustainability Plan, the former Deputy Prime Minister shared his opinion that its implementation is too expensive and risky, as well as its technology.
