The vote took place after months of public debate and lasted several hours of heated debate in the German Bundestag.

296 deputies voted for the vaccination, 378 against and 9 abstentions.

Earlier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he supported compulsory vaccination for all adults, but allowed lawmakers to submit their own proposals for today's vote, instead of the law being drafted and submitted by the government.

One of the coalition partners, the Liberal Free Democrats, was particularly skeptical about compulsory vaccination.

Voting will soon take place on other proposals that reject compulsory vaccination altogether or call for the establishment of a national vaccination register, BTA notes.

Germany will not abolish mandatory isolation for most people infected with COVID-19
