The European Commission has warned Malta to stop issuing passports in exchange for money.

APA reports quoting the Swiss website Le Matin that the Commission launched an investigation into Cyprus and Malta in October 2020.

Both countries were asked to stop issuing "golden passports".

Although the Republic of Cyprus will stop this procedure in 2021, Malta will continue to issue passports in return for investment.

Holders of Maltese passports can move freely within the EU.

Chinese and Russian citizens mainly benefit from this.

The commission sent another warning letter to the Maltese leadership.

The letter states that if appropriate measures are not taken within two months, it will be appealed to the European Court of Justice.
