The Prime Minister, Edi Rama at the end of the meeting of the Assembly of the Socialist Party spoke about the election of the new President of the country.

Regarding the speculations regarding the possibility of electing Lulzim Basha as head of state, he categorically ruled him out as a possibility.

"Lulzim Basha can become President of the Republic with the votes of this majority so much that Sali Berisha can win the Oscar," Rama said ironically.

Rama said that the SP has the votes and does not depend on other parliamentary parties.

The fact added that the SP has for the first time the votes to elect a president itself gives it more responsibility in selecting the name of the new president.

For the election of the President, the Assembly holds up to five votes.

The President is elected in the first, second or third ballot when a candidate receives not less than three-fifths of the votes of all members of the Assembly (84 votes).

In the fourth and fifth ballots, the candidate who secures more than half of the votes of all members of the Assembly (71 votes) is elected President.

In the last parliamentary elections of June 2021, the SP managed to secure 74 seats in the Assembly.

The mandate of the current President, Ilir Meta ends on July 24, 2022.

During the SP government in the pluralist period, it elected three presidents;

Alfred Moisiu, Rexhep Meidani and Ilir Meta.

Moisiu was a consensual president of PS-PD, while Meta with the cooperation of PS-LSI and Meidani was elected by the SP itself.
