Biden said he believes China understands the potentially dire economic consequences that would follow if the country provided assistance to Russia in its aggression in Ukraine.

Biden said he had a "very direct conversation" with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

He said he "did not make any threats" but made it clear that Xi "understood the consequences of his aid to Russia".

The U.S. chief said he noted the consequences of Russia's behavior and noted that China had sought to develop stronger economic ties with the West.

Biden claimed to have told Xi “that he would put himself in great danger with those intentions, if, in fact, he would go ahead.

"I think China understands that its economic future is much more closely linked to the West than to Russia."

He also announced new sanctions on more than 400 individuals and entities. "More than 300 Duma members and oligarchs driving Russian war machine will be sanctioned.

"NATO has never been more united than today."

Earlier in the day, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance would strengthen its chemical, biological and nuclear defense systems for fear that Russia was planning to use such weapons against the people of Ukraine.
