About 1,100 small earthquakes shook one of Portugal's volcanic islands in less than 48 hours, Reuters reported.

The quakes ranged between 1.9 and 3.3 on the island of Sao Jorge, part of the Azores, on Saturday afternoon.

Most of the earthquakes are near the Manadash volcanic fault, where the last eruption was in 1808.

Sao Jorge is one of the nine islands that make up the Azores.

It has about 8400 inhabitants.

Sao Jorge is part of the central archipelago in the archipelago, which includes the popular islands of Faial and Pico, which are also volcanic.

The sudden increase in seismic activity reminded us of the increased seismic activity before the eruption of Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of Palma last year, which is located about 1,400 kilometers southeast of the Azores.

In 85 days, the volcanic eruption there destroyed thousands of homes and arable land.
