Hungary is opening its doors to refugees from Ukraine, but continues to block the path of "aggressive" illegal migrants, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Siarto said yesterday at a UN meeting in Geneva, AFP reported.

"Hungary has already received more than 100,000 refugees from Ukraine in less than a week," the minister told the UN Human Rights Council.

According to the UN, Poland is the main host country for Ukrainian refugees, followed by Hungary with more than 116,000 refugees.

The Hungarian government, known for its tough anti-immigration policies, has opened its borders to Ukrainians fleeing the war.

Budapest has even adopted provisions allowing third-country nationals who have studied or worked in Ukraine to "enter Hungary without reason", Siarto explained.

However, the foreign minister told the UN Human Rights Council that "false information is being spread", that illegal migrants also have the right to enter Hungarian territory, taking advantage of the influx of refugees fleeing the fighting in Ukraine.

"This is a lie. The truth is that we do not allow illegal migrants to enter Hungarian territory and we will always protect Hungary from such people," he said.

The Hungarian foreign minister explained that any comparison between people fleeing the war and illegal migrants should be avoided.

"Illegal migrants tend to be aggressive."

destroy infrastructure and attack the police.

But refugees from Ukraine come to the border crossings, lined up very disciplined and very patient for hours, sometimes even all day, "Siarto said.

"They are cooperating with the authorities," the minister said, adding that "the comparison between the two groups is humiliating for those innocent people in need fleeing Ukraine."

Both the UN and migrants' rights activists have repeatedly criticized the anti-immigration policy of nationalist Prime Minister Victor Orban and accused his country of denying access to its territory to people who really need protection.

UN: Refugees from Ukraine have reached one million

German authorities have registered a total of 5,309 people who entered the country from Ukraine, according to federal police, Reuters reported.

A spokesman for the German Interior Ministry said the actual number of Ukrainian refugees crossing the German border may be significantly higher.

"As you know, there are no border controls, not regular ones, there are only random checks," he explained.
