Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova commented on the possibility of Finland and Sweden joining NATO.

Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

“All OSCE participating States, in their national capacity, including Finland and Sweden, have reaffirmed the principle that the security of some states should not be built to the detriment of the security of others.

It is obvious that the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, which is primarily known as a military bloc, will have serious military-political consequences that will require retaliatory steps on the part of our country, "she said.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General

Jens Stoltenberg

invited Sweden and Finland to take part in a virtual emergency summit of the alliance.

The Prime Minister of Finland

Sanna Marin

said at a parliamentary session that the country is ready to apply for NATO membership when the issue of national security arises.
