Hungary, which borders Ukraine to the west, has in the past taken a firm stand against all forms of immigration.

The country has made a controversial decision to refuse to accept refugees and asylum seekers from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

However, in a decree issued last night, the Hungarian government announced that all Ukrainian citizens arriving from Ukraine and all third-country nationals residing there legally will be entitled to protection.

Hungary will deploy troops near its border with Ukraine, Hungarian Defense Ministry says

The part of the decree targeting third-country nationals allows non-Ukrainian citizens, such as Belarusian refugees living in Ukraine, to receive protection in the European Union.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Hungary would not get involved in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but that it would accept refugees arriving at the Hungarian borders, BTA added.
