Russia's President Putin recognized the Donbass region in violation of the peace deal

In a big announcement, Russia has given the status of an independent country to the two eastern provinces of Ukraine.

In these provinces, pro-Russian separatists had already declared themselves separate from Ukraine.

In 2014, Russia also annexed the Crimea of the former Soviet country of Ukraine.

Thousands of people were killed in the massive violence during that time.

The Minsk Agreement was signed to stop this violence.

According to this, there was talk of giving more autonomy to these regions within Ukraine itself.

Russia had also described it as the best solution to the Ukraine problem, but now after declaring Donetsk and Luhansk areas of Ukraine as two separate countries from Russia, the US and NATO countries said. That Russia has terminated the Minsk Agreement.

There has been great tension between Russia and the US over the Ukraine crisis.

This is the worst security crisis for Europe since 1945.

Meanwhile, Russia told France and Germany that it was going to recognize Russia as an independent country, which has announced its separation from eastern Ukraine.

The impact of this announcement by Russia will be far-reaching.

America was already saying that Russia was ready to attack Ukraine with its 190,000 forces.

Dispute over Donbas region

Ukraine's separatist Donetsk and Luhansk regions are together called Donbass.

This region was separated from the influence of the Ukrainian government in 2014.

According to the news agency Reuters, Ukraine says that 15,000 people were killed in the fighting in 2014.

Russia does not claim to be directly involved in this fight, but arms and financial aid were given to the separatists from Russia.

Along with this, Russia also gave Russian passport to about 8 lakh people here.

But still Russia says that it does not plan to occupy Ukraine.

What will happen if the Donbass are recognized?

For the first time, Russia has said that it does not consider the Donbass to be the territory of Ukraine.

With this, Russia can openly send its troops to pro-Russian separatist areas of Ukraine.

Alexander Borodai, a member of the Russian parliament and former leader of Donetsk, has already said that Donetsk and Luhansk separatists will seek help from the Russian military if tensions escalate.

Donetsk and Luhansk are currently under the control of the Ukrainian military.

This whole atmosphere is giving a direct invitation to war between Ukraine and Russia.

What will the western countries do now?

Western countries have been warning Russia for a long time that if Russia takes military action on the Ukrainian border, it will get a strict answer and strict economic sanctions will be imposed.

On behalf of the US State Department, it was said last week that attempts to undermine Ukraine's sovereignty and border integrity would be a gross violation of international law and that the way to resolve this problem diplomatically could also be closed.

And if Russia does this, there will be a reaction from America and its allies.

What are the advantages and disadvantages for Russia?

Russia has already recognized two separatist territories after the 2008 war with Georgia.

The former Soviet country Georgia also had ambitions to join NATO.

But Russia indefinitely delayed

Georgia's chances of joining NATO by snatching full control of its borders  .

Now the same seems to be happening in the case of Ukraine as well.

Russia, on the other hand, will face international sanctions and criticism for abandoning the Minsk process after supporting it.

At the same time, Russia's economic responsibility in the Donbas region, burdened by the Eight Years' War, will also increase.
