Earlier in the day, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell announced that Brussels would propose to EU ministers to impose sanctions on the Kremlin if the Russian military invades Ukraine.



Borrell added that sanctions would also affect Belarus if action was taken against or with the country's participation.

"Recognition of Ukraine's two separatist territories is a gross violation of international law, Ukraine's territorial integrity and past agreements. The EU and its partners will respond with unity, firmness and determination in solidarity with Ukraine," the chairman wrote on Twitter. EC Ursula von der Layen.
