Amid tensions between Russia and Ukraine, the European Union wants the United States to become a major supplier of natural gas.

This is stated in a document of the European Commission.

Gazprom is currently Europe's largest supplier of natural gas, providing 40 percent of the required quantities.

The European Commission's document "Trade in liquefied natural gas between the European Union and the United States" states that America must become a major supplier because of the danger of interrupting transit through Ukraine.
